MIT Creative Portfolios Submission Guidelines

Researchers, performing artists, visual artists, and makers have the option to submit creative portfolios for review through SlideRoom. These portfolios are optional and should be included only if they present work that is both significant to the applicant and relevant to their MIT application.

Submission Deadlines: Portfolios must be submitted by the same deadline as the corresponding application cycle—Early Action or Regular Action.

Research Supplement: Students who have completed significant research projects outside of their high school coursework are encouraged to submit the Research Supplement via SlideRoom. If multiple research projects have been undertaken, applicants should focus on the most significant one.

Submission Instructions for Research Supplement:

  1. Answer a brief questionnaire about your research experience.

  2. Include a PDF of your abstract or research poster, if available. If the work has been published, provide a citation.

  3. Nominate your research advisor, mentor, or Principal Investigator to submit a letter of recommendation directly through SlideRoom.

Please note that only one Research Supplement is allowed per applicant.

Visual Art & Architecture Portfolios

The Visual Art & Architecture portfolio is for students with exceptional creative talent who wish to have their work assessed by MIT's professional faculty and staff. If your portfolio is a significant part of your application and demonstrates strong creative skills, submitting it through SlideRoom is highly recommended.

Submission Guidelines:

  • You may include any type of media, such as design, drawing, painting, mixed media, digital media, photography, sculpture, and architectural work.

  • Submit up to 10 images in your portfolio.

  • Each submission should include the title, medium, a brief description, completion date, and a short explanation of the work's concept or inspiration.

Important Note: Only one Visual Art & Architecture portfolio is allowed per applicant.

Portfolio Fee and Waivers

The submission fee for each portfolio is $10. However, recognizing that application fees can be challenging for some families, fee waivers are available for eligible applicants. To request a fee waiver, please email the SlideRoom portfolio team with the subject line "SlideRoom Fee Waiver" by the deadlines listed below. Your email should include your full name and date of birth. Note that the SlideRoom portfolio must be in progress to qualify for a fee waiver; waivers cannot be granted for portfolios that have not yet been started.

Fee Waiver Deadlines:

  • Early Action: Request by October 27 (Portfolios must be submitted by November 1)

  • Regular Action: Request by December 28 (Portfolios must be submitted by January 6)

Allow 3–5 days for processing. You will receive an email confirmation once your fee has been waived. Be sure to submit your portfolio by the specified deadline.
